Qawwalis

TV generally portrays a one-dimensional view of Islam. Where, for example, are scenes of whirling dervishes swirling their way closer to Allah? (Although I’m intrigued, I would make a terrible whirling dervish; vomiting doesn’t seem part of their devotional rituals.) And where is the music like this?

Wow, you can find just about anything on youtube.

I know. It's dangerously addictive. Soon they'll have to develop a 12-step program for people trying to get off Youtube.

You're so cool, Helen. And you're right. I always think of the Noor and Nasreen -- so unlike the image we get of Islam from the media. You might be interested in the writings of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi:

Whoever you may be, come
Even though you may be
An infidel, a pagan, or a fire-worshipper, come
Our brotherhood is not one of despair
Though you have broken
Your vows of repentance a hundred times, come.

Ah, Nusrat! I make a point of listening to him from a chair; I'd make a lousy dervish, too.

BTW, our National Public Radio got a lot of complaints this week for broadcasting the sound of someone vomiting. I admit that segment wasn't the high point of my car ride.

That whirling dervish video reminded me of my youth. We use to listen to Puff The Magic Dragon (and other tunes)in our basement and twirl like that.
Did anyone get dizzy watching the other video with the scroll going both ways?
